Painting Rocks & More

This week for our art Saturday we did 2 different painting activities.

My youngest collects rocks and has had a big interest in them for years. We have a few big ones in the yard from my grandfather. My husband and the kids stacked littler ones from their collection on top to make some pretty cool rock decorations for the yard. We decided to give them a little more flair by painting a few. I have some stencils I got from Wal-Mart very cheap, we used a few of those and free handed the rest. The kiddo hasn’t used the stencils before so this was a learning experience in painting technique as well. We have done this before, you can see our other painted rocks on the Arts & Crafts page if you’re looking for some ideas to do your own! This is a project we will probably repeat dozens of times, at least until the kid is no longer interested in them, which I don’t see happening judging by the size of the current collection. We have participated in The Kindness Rocks Project the last couple of years. If you don’t know what that is or have a geologist yourself it may be something you want to check out. The link for that is also below!

The second project we did was shoe painting. This was a first for the youngest, the oldest has done some very cute paintings on Converse. We use canvis shoes you can find online or at Wal-Mart for around $5. I sponge painted mine and the kiddo and dad painted random things on the little ones. There’s nothing particularly special about this project, it’s just a way to customize our shoes, make them a little more fun. We buy a new pair of these every summer. Typically they are our back up shoes we keep in the car for days we go out in less comfortable shoes and may want/need to change them later on. They are a cheap shoe that’s also pretty comfortable. These specific ones will now be our paint shoes since we paint outside quite a bit in the summer. You can see the adorable shoes the oldest did on the Arts & Crafts page as well if you’re looking for some inspiration to do your own!
