The ocean, or more accurately oceans since there are 5 of them. When most people think of the ocean they think beautiful, vast, deep blue, wondrous place. And while it is all of that, mostly it’s mysterious. The ocean covers over 70% of our world. Keeping in mind that land covers a mere 30% and we have still yet to uncover all it has to offer, caves we haven’t explored fully or at all yet, imagine what wonders are still waiting to be found in all that water! We are making triumphs all of the time, diving deeper and staying longer, but we haven’t even hit the complete bottom yet. It is truly an amazing thought.

When I was younger, in school, one of my teachers sat the whole calls down and asked us to draw a photo of a fish or sea creature, not one we knew all about or had ever seen, instead we were to make one up. Once the class was done drawing, the teacher stood in front of all of the excited children, eager to show off their creations and told us to look at what we drew and look at the others near us. “ You may have just drawn something that could be discovered one day” he said. “There is so much of the sea to explore still, and we have found some amazing and weird things in there. Who’s to say what you have made won’t be the next crazy thing found?” Now, I knew realistically the chances one of us drew a creature that would actually be found, but right then I fell in love with the ocean and everything it could hold. Looking back, I know he was using that little project as a way to encourage and/or motivate at least some of us to possibly pursue a career ocean related field, or at the very least entice us enough to do our part to protect it however we could.

Take a few moments, try this out with your children. You may spark a new interest they didn’t know they had, or at least help them to understand the need to protect this magical place and all that inhabit it. The ocean is a vital resource, it is important that we do our best to ensure this next generation also understand that and do their part as well. Teaching the next generation about all of this is a big part of us as parents “doing our part”. Every little bit helps! Save and protect this incredible place and all that reside there, however you can. I couldn’t help but think of all of this when doing the first project below. The kid loved coming up with new creatures and it was pretty cool to see what came out of that growing brain!

I made an interactive magnetic ocean layers/zones painting for the kiddo and our ocean study theme! We paint a lot (check out more below) and have just about run out of room to hang the art, so when the kid asked to do painting for art class I decided to make a mobile interactive art piece.

This was very simple to do. I printed some sea creatures, the kiddo colored some and made some up after we had the discussion about not knowing what awesome, weird things they could find! As I said above, there’s no wrong answer because we have no clue what else is down there! I laminated everything and attached magnet sheets to the pages and cut them out. Then, I placed a sheet of metal (flat stock steal) behind my canvas painting and cut a smaller metal sheet to store the magnets not in use. Now we have a cool, unique new teaching aid and fun toy!

I’m not a professional artist, but the painting gets the point across. All of the colors were choose by the kiddo, as was the design of the ocean layer painting. I did my best to match the design selected (again not a pro here 😆). I think it turned out pretty well and we are have had a lot of fun using it with the ocean layer pack! You can download a copy for FREE below! The kiddo copied my painting on a smaller canvas to hang. I think the kid crushed it!
